Kyösti Haatanen (05/10/1947), a Finnish composer. He studied the violin, viola and orchestral conducting (Prof. Alois Klima and Jorma Panula) at the Sibelius Academy and graduated from the Panula conducting class in 1974. He then continued his studies at the Berlin Music Academy and the University of Jyväskylä. He has played the violin and viola in the Jyväskylä City Orchestra, the orchestra of the Finnish National Opera, the Helsinki Philharmonic and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. Director of Music for the town of Savonlinna 1973-80, he was conductor and Artistic Director of the Jyväskylä City Orchestra 1980-86. He has made guest conducting appearances at a number of festivals and with orchestras both in Finland and abroad. At the Savonlinna Opera Festival he has conducted Boris Godunov, Haydn’s Creation, Sarmanto’s Perfect Harmony and his own Requiem. Haatanen has also composed and arranged both classical and light music. His best-known works are the song cycle “Matkalla” for mixed choir (1994), his Christmas Oratorio (1994) and Requiem (1997) for soloists, choir and symphony orchestra.
