Karel Blazej [Karel] Kopriva -also: Koprziwa- (09/02/1756 - 16/05/1785), a Czech composer and organist, son of Wenzel (Vaclav Jan) Kopriva (1708 - 1789). He was born in Citoliby (Czitolib), a town not quite 60 kilometers from Prague. His father and brother were composers and musicians as well. Karel was a major talent of Czech music as well as a personality, who influenced the musical life of his hometown. Dlabbac's dictionary of musicians rightfully regards him as one of the best students and of the best Prague's organists and composers. During his studies in Prague he moved in the circlkes of the musical culture around the Church of St. Francis and the Church of the Virgin Mary before Tyn, where his teacher Josef Seger was organist. Kopriva spent his lifetime as an organist and music teacher in Citoliby and comp-osed primarily masses and knew how to employ his extraordinary harmonic and polyphonic imagination in his works.
