Peter Joshua [Peter] Sculthorpe (29/04/1929 - 08/08/2014), an Australian composer, born in Launceston (Tasmania), died in Sydney, Australia. He has been the recipient of many awards and prizes for his music, including an Australian Film Industry Award for best original film score (Manganinnie) in 1980, and the 1985 APRA Award for most performed Australian serious work (his Piano Concerto). Recordings of Sculthorpe's orchestral works and music for strings have won Australian Record Industry Awards for best classical music recording in 1991 and 1996. He has written works in most musical forms, and his output relates easily to the unique social climate and physical characteristics of Australia. Furthermore, his country's geographical position has caused him to be influenced by much of the music of Asia, especially that of Japan and Indonesia. Certainly he is Australia's best-known composer, and his works are regularly performed and recorded throughout the world. He composed an earlier requiem too, back in 1979. A short work for cello solo.
