Hendrik Franciscus [Hendrik] Andriessen (17/09/1892 - 12/04/1981), a Dutch composer (born in Haarlem). He studied the organ with J.B. de Pauw and composition with Bernard Zweers at the Amsterdam Conservatory of Music. After graduating from the Conservatory in 1916 Andriessen worked as an organist, pianist, composer, author and lecturer. From 1927 to 1948 he taught composition and theory at the Amsterdam Conservatory. From 1930 to 1949 he taught those subjects as well as organ, including improvisation and the accompanying of Gregorian chant, at the Roman Catholic music school in Utrecht. In 1934 he became organist of the Utrecht Cathedral and from 1937 on director of the Utrecht Conservatory. In 1949 Andriessen was appointed director of the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. Between 1954 and 1963 he was professor of musicology at the Catholic University in Nijmegen.
