Felix Alexandre [Alexandre] Guilmant (03/12/1837 - 03/29/1911), a French organist and composer. He received his first organ lessons from his father and also played the piano and violin. After studying in Paris and Brussels, he returned to his hometown of Boulogne-sur-Mer, where he first took over the position of organist at the Saint Joseph church and later became conductor of the Saint Nicolas church. His first compositions were purely liturgical for his own use and were never published. In 1868 he played as one of the organists at the inauguration of the new organ in the Church of Notre Dame in Paris and moved to the Seine metropolis in 1871. There he worked at the new Church of Saint-Trinité before becoming a member of the Société Philharmonique and a teacher at the Conservatoire in Paris. In 1878 he began to give organ concerts, first in Paris, which made him known beyond the local area. After quarrels with the church leadership, he traveled as a virtuoso through many countries, including twice through the United States. At the Saint Louis Exhibition alone he gave 40 concerts, which caused quite a stir and cast a new light on French organ music. After the death of his wife he wrote his last composition (opus 94: Trois Oraisons) in 1910 and died a year later.
