João de Deus Castro Lobo (16/03/1794 - 26/01/1832), a Brazilian composer. He was born in 1794 in Vila Rica, Minas Gerais, Brazil. João de Deus Castro Unfortunately Lobo died young in Mariana, probably of a tuberculosis, in 1832.
He studied music at the seminary of Mariana, Brazil, and was ordained priest. From 1817 to 1824 LOBO was organist at the church the Church of our Lady of the of Carmelites in Vila Rica, where Lobo also conducted the Choir and orchestra of the Opera Theatre in Villa Rica. Lobo was appointed chapel master of the church of our Lady of Mariana, where at the end of his life he was appointed too as organist. Some of his about 40 sacred compositions are known among others some Masses and Responsórios Fúnebres/ the funeral Responds.

Responsórios Fúnebres
Nearly all Responds responsorium out of the Officium Defunctorum ad Matutinum - Office of the Dead ad Matins - have been set by the Brazilian composer Father João de Deus Castro LOBO for four-part SATB with an orchestration consisting out Flauto I+II, Fagot I, Cor I+II en F, Violine I +II, Viola, Violoncello, Contrabaxio and Organo. The orchestration of the seventh Respond ‘Peccantem me quotidie’ was not yet completed. They seemed to be a part of a total Officium Defundtorum which have not been finished. This manuscript Responsórios Fúnebres has been found in 1897.
