Herman Strategier (10/08/1912 - 26/10/1988), a Dutch composer, born in Arnhem. He studied piano with Phons Dusch, theory with Johan Winnubst, and organ and composition with Hendrik Andriessen at the Roman Catholic School of Church Music. Thereafter he continued his composition studies with Andriessen for several years. For many years he lectured at the Conservatories for Music in Utrecht and Rotterdam and at the Nederlands Instituut voor Katholieke Kerkmuziek in Utrecht. Until 1977 he was lecturer theory of music at the Utrecht State University. In the period 1959-1973 he conducted the Dutch Madrigal Choir in Leiden and for a extensive period of time, he was organist at the St. Catharina Cathedral in Utrecht. As a composer, he had great affinity with the style of his teacher, Hendrik Andriessen, but he also admired Fauré, Poulenc, Boulanger, Debussy and others. His music reveals characteristics of subdued exuberance, cheerfulness and drama. Strategier wrote about 400 compositions including 200 masses and works of praise. Among his most important works are Arnhemse Psalm, written for the 25th memorial of the Battle of Arnhem, Te Deum, Rembrandt Cantate, O-antifonen, Requiem. Additionally he wrote a piano concerto, orchestral works (Musique pour faire plaisir, Partita in Modi Antichi), a string quartet, an accordion concerto, songs, works for piano, organ and carillon.
