Jovanka Trbojevic (27/03/1963 - 12/05/2017), a female Finnish composer. She was born in former Yugoslavia, raised in Belgrade, and then took a piano diploma in Prague. In 1986 she settled in Finland, studying composition at the Sibelius Academy. Her background is thus a mixture of the Balkan music tradition, the Bohemian-German-Slav ethos and the academic Nordic approach to composition; she cannot be ascribed to any particular school. Major works include: ....kada bih mog'o biti drag... (1991) for mezzo-soprano, bass clarinet, double bass and percussion (text by Tin Ujevic); string quartet ORO (1993-94); Self-portrait with a Song (1993) for solo violin and folk music band; Wolfs lullaby (1995) and Rondo for Tara (2002) for clarinet, harp and double bass; Zuti put (1996) for ten musicians; Music for Gilles Requiem for orchestra and choir (1998-99); a music theatre play by Opera Nord; In the view of the wise for three female voices and their hands (2001); the Fantome... cycle of pieces for electronics and different solo instruments (1998-01); and Piano Sonata (2001-02). Caelo
Period:21st century
Composed in:2000
Musical form:free
Text/libretto:Latin
In memory of:the 20th century
Caelo, composed in 2000, for children's choir/female choir/mixed choir. Text in Latin.
Trbojevic: "Caelo is a requiem for the bygone 20th century, the bloodiest one in the history of humankind. Wars, hunger, national miseries and miserable individual destinies, that is the sad sum of the 20th century. We speak about progress and civilised world, but look around. Is it there? It is not much left for an individual to do, except to pray - Kyrie eleison, Christe eleison. And let it be "Sed libera nos a malo" a motto for the 21st century."
