Philippus van Steelant [also: Steenlant, Steelandt] (1611 - 1670), a Belgian composer and organist of the Sint-Jacobskerk; born in Antwerp.
Philippus van Steelant (Steenlant, Steeland, more names are found in the archives), we mention him as Philippus (III) was born out of a family of musicians. Philipus I Jansz came from Bruges to Antwerp around 1556 he became a citizenship of Antwerp where he was a trumpeter/‘spielman’. His Son Philippus (II) born in Brussels around 1581 moved to Antwerp and after education he became in 1602 the citizenship of Antwerp and was a distinguished member of the trumpeters the Guild of the Antwerp Spielman St. Job and Maria Magdalene. Further Philippus (II) was a cornetto-player in several Antwerp churches. His son Philippus III born in Antwerp in 1611 was musician and a South Netherlandish early baroque composer who lived all his life in Antwerp. The got his musical education by his father. Philippus III was composer and organist of the St. Jacob-church (Saint James-church) in Antwerp (period 1644-1670) and organist of the Saint Carolus Borromeus Church in Antwerp (period 1554-1456). Even more in his early days Van Steelant was organist of the Saint Eloois-chapel in Antwerp. Van Steelant wrote several Cantiones Natalitiae and he published Missae et Moteta 5 et 6 vocum, cum instrumenti and repieno, Antwerp 1655-1656, apud Petri Phalesius MDCLVI. This opus consists out of three Masses and four motets. Two Requiem masses are known and composed in 1650 and in 1656 and found in an inventory out of 1734 of Oudenaarde/Belgium, Messe de Requiem à 6 voix et 5 instruments (1650) and in the archives of the St. Goedele-church Brussels the Requiem mass 6 Voc. & 6 Voc. Repien out of the mentioned Volume Missae et Moteta (1656).
All his live Philippus III worked in Antwerp and passed away unmarried in 1670. Van Steelant could be in Antwerp a teacher of composer Benedictus à Sancto Josepho (1643-1716) born in Geldern/Germany who worked all his life in Boxmeer/the Netherlands.
