Jheronimus (Hieronimus) Vinders (ca.1510 - ca.1550), a Flemish composer. He wrote a Lamentation sur la mort de Josquin (available on Naxos 8.553428)

Unfortunately little is know about Jheronimus / Hieronymus Vinders (Vindter, Vender). Perhaps Vinders was a pupil of Josquin. In any case he lived in Flanders between 1510 and 1550. He belongs to the fourth Flemish generation. He was an admirer of Josquin, because he not only composed a Mass on a motet of Josquin but the more Vinders composed a "Lamentatio super morte Josquin", for seven voices which is not inferior in expressiveness for those written by Gombert on the same occasion. In the archives of the Confraternity of Our Illustrious Lady ( in Dutch: Illustre Lieve Vrouwe Broederschap) in ‘s-Hertogenbosch-Holland there are some masses by Vinders found .”Missa fit porta Christi pervia”; “Missa mijn liefkens bruijn ooghen”; “Missa fors seulement”, this Mass is probable written by Gombert; “Missa stabat mater dolorosa”, further a Stabat Mater.

This interesting motet ”Lamentatio super morte, Josquin de Prés” written by Hieronymus Vinders at the occasion of the death of JOSQUIN in 1521 is written for seven voices (SSATTBB). In different sources this work has been found in 1536 in Munich, in 1545 by Susato, Antwerp and in 1564 by Montanus, Nuremberg. Vinders quotes two plainchant out of the rite Pro defunctis. The Tenor primus, a tenor voice sings the plainchant `Requiem Aeternam` out of the Invitatorium Ad Matutinum Officium Defunctorom. The Sexta pars, a tenor voice sings the plainchant `Requiem Aeternam` out of the Introit of the Missae pro Defunctis. And the two Bass voices are imitating bells of dead. This work consists out of 60 bars and from bar 48 nearly all voices, except tenor primus, are singing `requiescat in pace`. The Sexta pars ends with: Proptera tu musice: requiescat in pace! If you hear and see this work; this Epithaphium to Josquin sounds like a triumph over the dead to be in heaven with the musicae, Muses!
