Gerard Hubertus Galenus [Gerard] von Brucken Fock (28/12/1859 - 15/08/1935) was a Dutch piano player, but gave up his career to compose and paint. Born in Koudekerke. Gerard Von Brucken Fock grew up in the province of Zeeland as a child of well-to-do parents. Composer and soldier Emile A. von Brucken Fock was one of his brothers. He has studied in Utrecht with Richard Hol (composition, 1877-1879) and with T.L. van de Wurff (piano), and in Berlin with Friedrich Kiel, Woldemar Bargiel and Ernst Rudorff. In 1888 he settled with his wife in Amsterdam. The summers he spent in the seaside resort of Domburg, where he befriended Jan Toorop and other painters. Having moved his home many times, at last he settled in Heemstede in 1920. Von Brucken Fock was both a composer and a painter. Several of his compositions were published in Holland and abroad, and generally well received. His piano works show the influence of Chopin and Liszt. He wrote many religious works, including an oratorio ‘De wederkomst van Christus’ (‘The Second Coming of Christ’, 1910) and a Requiem (1933). He has also attempted to spread his Tolstoian social-religious views as an evangelist.
