Josi Carlos Amaral Vieira
1952 -
Brazil
Amaral Vieira (02/03/1952), a Brazilian composer, pianist, pedagogue, and musicologist, born in São Paulo. He studied composition in France with Messiaen and piano in London with Carl Seemann. Vieira's vast output is extremely diverse, encompassing works in virtually every genre and for a great variety of performing ensembles. In his piano works, he embraced large-scale forms as well as collections of short compositions with a highly distinctive character, in the best tradition of the Romantic and post-Romantic piano miniatures, while his large vocal and orchestral works show a distinct blend of late-Romantic and contemporary techniques.
Missa pro defunctis
Missa pro defunctis (1984), opus 187, is for chorus and orchestra. It contains:
01. Introitus 02. Kyrie 03. Dies irae 04. Offertorium The serious nature of these texts brings out the best of the composer's gift for lyrical melodic invention and beautiful, rich yet uncluttered textures. The Missa is for a cappella chorus, while the string orchestra of his Stabat Mater complements the choral writing perfectly in achieving a sonorous setting for this most beautiful text.
Requiem in memoriam
Requiem in memoriam (1985) opus 203, is for chorus and orchestra. It contains:
01. Introitus 02. Kyrie 03. Offertorium 04. Sanctus (with a citation of the Brazilian anthem) 05. Agnus Dei This requiem and his Te Deum use conventional choral and orchestral forces in music much of which could have been written by Bruckner, if not Schubert. Both works have a certain austerity, though the Te Deum is pervaded by a sense of triumph throughout. The Requiem was written in memory of the Brazilian President Tancredo de Almeida Neves († 1985), and has the air of a sincere and tender elegy (if on a national scale), lacking the dramatic and hysterical grieving associated with the Romantic requiem.
