In memory of:/ dedicated to Nicholas Routley
Requiem (1994; revised 1997), for unaccompanied six-part chorus. Duration: 20'. In its original form, the Requiem comprised the spinal column of Funereal Rites, the 1994 theatre piece written for and commissioned by The Song Company. The Latin movements were extracted and the piano accompaniment excised for this new version, presented to choral conductor Nicholas Routley as a gift on his 60th birthday. Both versions of the work reflect the composer’s background as an organist and cathedral chorister around the time of the Second Vatican Council in the mid-1960s.
About the revised version of the Requiem (1997); instrumentation: SSATBarB choir. Text from Latin Requiem Mass. These are the unaccompanied Latin sections, extracted, with minor adjustments, from 'Funereal rites' (1994) for 6 solo voices and piano, commissioned by and composed for The Song Company. Dedication: "For Nicholas Routley on his 50th birthday, June 1997". Duration: 25 min.
