Grippe: "In 1994 I started with the music that eventually became Requiem with soprano Madeleine Kristoffersson. Requiem was a new start towards a new blend of music, combining the sound of pop music with the operatic voice. Released on BIS in 1996, it was performed and much talked about in many countries. Why compose a requiem? For a long period of, perhaps, ten years, I have been thinking about how to write my requiem. Many friends whode memories I should like to honour have disappeared. Yhe idea was there but the work had yet to take form. In 1994 a friend asked me to take a chance by composing the music for a film that was to be made in Stockholm. The director would later decide whether to use my music or not. In the end he chose not to use my score and I suddenly found myself with a work that I felt needed one thing added - a voice. I had met Madeleine Kristoffersson earlier and she seemed just the crazy sort of person who might - in spite of her operatic voice - be able to sing in the work.
We began with the three songs ("Requiem aeternam", "Dies Irae II" and a third song that was not included in the requiem because it was a Mozart pastiche). We both found the collaboration stimulating and I the wrote the orther eleven songs. This took from October 1994 until March 1995, when we started recording the voice and producing the final mix.
In connection with the requiem I should like to thank Jerker Granath for his guidance in selecting instruments and equipment in my studio, Lasse Summanen who invited me to write the original film music which was then not used, Göran Svensson who has assisted me in the studio, Joe Geiger and Les Quindipan at Mark of the Unicorn, my wife Elisabeth whose criticism is always constructive and encourages me to continue, and everyone who has shown the appreciate my music."
