Wolfgang Stendel (12/07/1943 - 18/09/2022), a German composer. Born in Magdeburg, died in Wernigerode. He received private piano and later organ lessons from 1955 onwards. He was a member of the Magdeburg Cathedral Choir and there he learned about the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, Johannes Brahms and Anton Bruckner, which particularly impressed him. Stendel studied composition with Prof. Paul-Heinz Dittrich and Prof. Günter Kochan and piano with Prof. Grete Herwig at the “Hanns Eisler” University of Music in Berlin from 1966 to 1972. From 1972 to 1974 he was Kochan's master student. After completing his studies, he began teaching music theory at the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg. From 1981 he worked as a freelance composer. Due to his interest in history and architecture as well as to get to know different world cultures directly, he visited France, England, Italy and Spain several times. Travels also took him, among other things, to Scandinavia, North and Central America, Central Asia, China, Japan, India. Until 2000, all of his compositions were created in Magdeburg. He then moved to Wernigerode, where he lived and worked for many years.
