Marina Adamia (1959), a female Georgian composer. She was born in Tbilisi in the Republic of Georgia. She studied piano and composition from an early age, initially under the supervision of Nodar Mamisashvili, and then for a period at Tbilisi Conservatoire. She continued her studies at Moscow Conservatoire with Nikolai Sidelnikov and Edison Denisov. While there, she also taught music history and harmony, before graduating with a degree in Music Theory and Composition. Moving to the United Kingdom in 1991, Marina settled in Edinburgh where she completed a Ph.D. in composition with Nigel Osborne. She is a part-time lecturer specilising in composition, 20th century music and Georgian folk music at the University of Edinburgh. Her compositions range from solo pieces to those for full orchestra.
On her return to Georgia, Marina worked at a Tbilisi music college, teaching music theory and harmony. She continued to compose, while also acting as music director of the Akhaltsikhe Drama Theatre, and collaborating with the Rustaveli Theatre. Marina moved to the United Kingdom in 1991 and settled in Edinburgh. She was awarded a PhD degree in composition by Edinburgh University, where she studied with Professor Nigel Osborne. She currently lectures at the University.
Marina is a freelance professional composer, and now divides her time between Edinburgh and Tbilisi. Her compositions range from solo pieces to works for full orchestra and have been performed in Georgia, the other republics of the South Caucasus, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, Denmark, and Germany.
