František Xaver Vojtěch Emanuel [František / Franz] Brixi (02/01/1732 - 14/10/1771), a Bohemian composer from Prague. He came from a significantly musical family. His father Simon was a famous Prague organist. In two decades of composing, F. X. Brixi managed to compose an enormous opus (approximately 500 pieces), in which he took up with pathos and polyphony during the peak of the Baroque period, but also with elements of classicism. Brixi's rich inventiveness, resulting partly from local tradition, was very close to folk music sentiment. Even W. A. Mozart held a rather elevated opinion of this aspect of his work. F. X. Brixi composed more than 100 masses, 263 hymns, motets and offertories, 5 requiems, Christmas pastorals, choral-instrumental boat music for St. John processions on the Vltava River, school plays, and organ compositions. He became one of the best recognized composers of the 18th Century. Many copies of his work were distributed, not only throughout Bohemia, but also throughout the rest of Central Europe. From 1759 he held the most musically significant position in the country, conductor of the St. Vitus Cathedral Orchestra.
