Stefan Malzew (1964), a German composer and conductor of the Neubrandenburger Philharmonie, born in Berlin. Following his first music lessons he came to the Berlin special school of music in 1973 and prepared himself in addition to his instrumental training (piano and clarinet) for conducting studies. Already then he composed his first works. From 1981 until 1986 he studied at the Berlin Musikhochschule 'Hanns Eisler'. Even as a student Stefan Malzew wrote his first opera Crystal based on E. T. A. Hoffmann's short novel Der goldene Topf. Since that time he has composed in addition to various works of chamber music and orchestra works two more already performed operas (Das Opernpupp 1996 in Schwerin and Libuschas Tod 2001 in Gießen). His versions of Puccini's operas Tosca and La Bohème arranged for a younger audience have been performed repeatedly. For children he arranged Mozart's Magic Flute for a chamber ensemble. His Clarinet Concerto won a prize of the Berlin Paul Woitschach Foundation.
Following an artistic assistantship at the Hochschule für Musik Berlin he was appointed Second Kapellmeister of the Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater Schwerin in 1987 where he was in charge of a broad concert and music theatre repertoire.
As a guest Stefan Malzew has conducted concerts with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the Berliner Sinfonie-Orchester, the Berliner Symphoniker, the Dresdner Philharmonie, and the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival Orchestra and other orchestras.
