Missa pro defunctis
The requiem (Op.59) composed by Henschel in memory of his wife, the
American soprano Lillian (June) Bailey (Henschel)
(18/01/1860 – 04/11/1901), was first performed in Boston, Mass., Dec. 2, 1902, and has since been given in Holland, Germany, etc.
Missa pro defunctis, a requiem mass for solo voices, chorus, organ and orchestra.
Henschel, the first conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra produced a curious requiem (op. 59) that juxtaposes chant and chant-like vocal sections against bombastic passages. Written in 1902, it seems to have been performed rather often within a short period.
