Giovanni Battista Martini
1706 - 1784
Italy
Giovanni Battista Martini -'Padre Martini'- (24/04/1706 - 04/10/1784), an Italian composer, theorist and teacher, from Bologna.
Requiem
This Requiem is for four voices and published in 1745. Padre Martini wrote 32 masses among which 6 requiems (incl. the requiem mass of 1756).
Requiem aeternam
Anthem for 3-part equal voices a cappella; refrain by G.B. Martini alternates with Latin and English verses of Psalm 130; Requiem aeternam is an example of a perfectly simple yet highly effective liturgical setting. A refrain on the text "Requiem aeternam dona eis Domine: et lux perpetua luceat eis" is taken from the "Introit" for the Requiem Mass ("Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord: and may perpetual light shine upon them."). This refrain, set by Padre Giovanni Battista Martini (1706-1784) for a cappella 3-part equal voices, alternates with verses of Psalm 130 in Latin and English, using Gregorian tone 2. Requiem aeternam is useful at various places in the funeral Mass and may be sung by a small choir with great success.
Requiem
Requiem written for three soloists ( 2 tenors and a bass), a male choir (TTB) and Continuo (organ). It contains:
