Francesco Usper (Sponga)

Francesco Usper -his name is actually Francesco Sponga, Spongia or Sponza- (23/11/1561 - 24/02/1641), an Italian composer and organist, born in Rovigno. He collaborated with Giovanni Battista Grillo pupil of Claudio Monteverdi. He was ordained priest and was organist of the church of San Salvatore in Venice.
Requiem
In an account of a requiem performed in Venice 25 May 1621 at a memorial service for the late Duke of Tuscany, Cosimo II de’ Medici (1590-1621), Giulio Strozzi refers to music (now lost) by Monteverdi and his colleagues Giovanni Battista Grillo and Francesco Usper, including solo vocal items and an instrumental sinfonia at the start of the ceremonies and recurring during the introit.
Francesco Sponga-Usper took part, with some important pieces, at the funeral mass for the Duke of Tuscany, Cosimo II de' Medici, in the church of S. Giovanni e Paolo in Venice, together with Claudio Monteverdi and Giovanni Battista Grillo.
