Aart Strootman (1987) is a Dutch guitarist, composer, instrument maker and teacher, born in Oud-Beijerland. Since 2009 he has been teaching music history, advanced ear training, music analysis, philosophy and recitation. He is best known for his work with the ensemble F.C. Jongbloed, his performances of works by Steve Reich and TEMKO, with which he makes minimalist music, inspired by Meshuggah, among others. He also studied with Dick Hogeveen, Hein Sanderink, Marlon Titre, Elliot Fisk and Scot Tennant.
As a solo guitarist he played with, among others, the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, the WDR, the SWR, Britten Sinfonia and the New York Philharmonic. In 2014, Strootman led the project To You by composer Peter Schat with F.C. Youngblood. He wrote history by re-performing old 'forgotten' works by Dutch composers.
Biography Strootman studied in Tilburg with Hein Sanderink and obtained his Bachelor in Music cum laude in 2008 and obtained the Master in Music with the highest degree (10/10) cum laude at the Conservatory in 2010. He simultaneously obtained a Master's degree in Music Theory and a Master of Arts in Musicology from the University of Utrecht.
In 2018 he studied at Leiden University with the docARTES program.
Prices In 2017, Strootman received the Gaudeamus Award. In 2018 he won 1st prize for composers at the Prix Annelie de Man and 1st prize at the 4Viola competition. In 2019, Strootman received the Matthijs Vermeulen Prize for his composition Shambling Emerge – after after party.

Farewell to life and the last words you want to whisper to your loved ones and loved ones. Last April, composer, lyricist and singer Jan Rot died at the age of 64. A very gifted all-round artist with a big heart for music. In addition to his countless albums under his own name, Jan Rot is also well known for his striking retranslations. For example, he shed light on Schubert and Mahler songs, Bach's St. Matthew Passion and Ein deutsches Requiem by Brahms.
Like every year, around All Saints' Day, a new Bosch Requiem will be performed during November Music, composed by a Dutch composer. This year Aart Strootman is writing an intense requiem with a text by Jan Rot. Just before his death, Rot addressed the world once more in a moving libretto. His poetic, hopeful text was entitled Last Words. When Jan Rot sent the libretto to Aart Strootman, he wrote about his text as 'someone's voice as a message left behind'.
Strootman composes a comforting requiem for eight cellos, four percussionists, two singers and two (bass) guitars, inspired by the elusive rhythm of church bells and the design of Brahms Ein deutsches Requiem. Guitarist/composer Aart Strootman (1987) constantly ventures at the intersection of many musical genres. From pop music and minimal, to contemporary composed and avant-garde jazz. Strootman previously won the Gaudeamus Music Prize and the Matthijs Vermeulen Prize and has been a regular guest on November Music for years.
