Conceived within the bounds of liturgical worship are a number of a cappella requiem settings, which display a simplicity and sobriety that recall the aims of the 19th-century Cecilian movement. Principal among these are those of Pizzetti (1922–3), Georges Migot (1953), Priaulx Rainier (1955), Randall Thompson (1958) and Iain Hamilton (1979).
Throughout his life, Ildebrando Pizzetti struggled to emerge from the shadows of two more notable contemporaries, Puccini and Respighi. His orchestral music could not match Respighis flair and his operas have never received the recognition of Puccinis, but Pizzettis unaccompanied choral music represents the finest Italian turn-of-the-century artistry. His Messa di Requiem, composed in 1922, is a work firmly steeped in the Gregorian tradition.
