Musicalische exequien opus 7 (1636), for vocal soloists & continuo. Written for the funeral of Heinrich Posthumus von Reuss, prince of Thüringen, who died 3 December 1635.
01. "Nacket bin ich vom Mutterleibe kommen" SWV 279 02. "Herr, wenn ich nur dich" SWV 280 03. "Herr nun lässest du deinen Diener" SWV 281 SWV 279 was written before the death of Reuss, who took part in the performances; SWV 280 and 281 just before Reuss' death, who gave last instructions.

Composers such as Schütz, Praetorius, Thomas Selle, Michael Haydn, Schubert, J.I. Müller, C. Bütner, J.F. Fasch and Brahms contributed to this category. These 'German Requiems' may derive their texts from the Lutheran Bible, as Brahms's did, of from a variety of Protestant liturgical sources and ceremonies.
