Written to a text by Kurt Vonnegut jr. (1922), Edgar David Grana’s operatic requiem mass is also a modernist, rigorous chamber work. Vonnegut’s idiosyncratic liberation of the fustian language of the Council of Trent is magnificent and liberating and obviously inspired Grana to reach new heights of musical excellence. The Magic Circle Opera Ensemble, America’s only chamber opera company, gives an exhilarating performance, buoyed by the enthusiastic playing of the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra.
