Requiem for a young poet (written between 1967-1969) for speaker, soprano, baritone, three choirs, orchestra, jazz ensemble, organ and tape. It is a collage of several texts including the German constitution, words by Mao-Tse Tung, and Joyce's Finnegans Wake and Ulysses. The two sources most prominent in the composition are Wittgenstein's Philosophische Untersuchungen and two poems by the Austrian poet Konrad Bayer. Zimmermann also works musical quotations into his work ranging from the choral movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and Wagner's Tristan und Isolde to The Beatles Hey Jude.
